About Us
We thought the Sunshine Coast community was missing out on experiencing one of the biggest celebrations on the New Zealand calendar. The Waitangi Day Celebration is not only about the signing of the Waitangi treaty to share living rights on the land but importantly is the celebration of the New Zealand culture. We believe culture plays a big part in any society, it’s what shapes us as people as well as our way of life.
The event celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, which guaranteed New Zealand’s Maori people land rights and marked the coming together in friendship of Maori people and European settlers. The Waitangi Celebration is not only about the signing of the treaty but importantly the celebration of the New Zealand culture.
The 2010 event will also feature traditional and historical influences including a reading of the "Treaty of Waitangi" and historical information.
The aim is to continue growing and improving the event for everyone on the Sunshine Coast (and surrounds) to come and enjoy, get involved and experience kiwi and pacific island culture, entertainment, amazing dancing and ofcourse the food!
A licensed bar and a wide variety of food will also be available, including traditional south pacific cuisine, seafood, ice cream, coffee, and even a hangi which uses the traditional methods of slow cooking meat beneath the ground. The hangi will be ready early and available in take-away alfoil containers.
If you have a maori, sporting, community or other interest group, we invite you to contact us to see how you can be involved in Waitangi Day 2010. This event is for the whole community and we welcome interested parties who would like to get involved.
